She sat in the corner as she did every afternoon for the last few years she had been here. A sketchbook, the kind without wire rings, sat open in her lap and a pencil tucked behind her ear, as was also typical. She drummed her fingers on the stark white linoleum flooring, trying to avoid the sounds of the people around her. She knew she didn’t belong here, but she gave up long ago convincing anyone of that.
So, on a day just like any other day, she sat in the lounge room floor of the teen mental unit at Willowcreek Psychiatric Hospital, and began to draw what she thought life might be like outside of these sterile, off white walls.
Imagine a world where everyone is the same. Where anyone who dares to stray from the norm is claimed to be mentally insane and put in an asylum with truly crazy people. Where you may be locked away for the rest of your life…all because you were true to yourself.
Well once the Individuality Reform was put into effect after scientists found a drug that turned everyone into Stepford Wives, Corporate Suit, Abercrombie Clones that was exactly what happened. Everyone had to mandatorily take the shot that was created. But for some it didn’t have the desired effect. Certain people, all of whom had always rebelled against the norm, had genetic faults that kept them from being transformed. This also was the effect in patients with mental disorders, so it was assumed that the people who weren’t effected had some sort of mental issues. So everyone in this small town, USA were carted off to the Willowcreek Asylum.
There they were considered the same as someone with BiPolar or Schizophrenia. There were crazy people there, but not all were insane. And sadly, until they could be ‘rehabilitated’ they were kept there..sometimes only leaving in a pine box.
So, what will you do when your world is turned upside down? When you’re locked away with tons of insane people, some of who might just try to strangle you with a sheet in your sleep.
